Soundtrack of 2011...

For this particular category, I was torn between several tracks from the uplifting, ready to take on the world feeling created by Florence and the Machine's 'Shake It Out' to the priceless memories of incredibly drunken work nights out conjured by Nicki Minaj's 'Super Bass' (a song that I originally despised). However, after much deliberation I found my soundtrack of 2011:

M83 - Midnight City

The first single from the band's double album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming' provides a platform for Anthony Gonzalez's spacey, electronic talent. Alongside the fact that the song has become immensely popular in general, I feel that it has filled a place in my personal year; with each play I end up lost in the music. I could listen to it on a repeat loop and never tire which, when it comes to my musical impatience, is a rare find. In addition to the repeat play power of 'Midnight City', the track itself also makes me feel particularly inspired. When I was at school I learned to play saxophone but over the last two years I have rarely even opened the case. I always blame my commitment to university and work experience when really I am just making excuses for myself. This song makes me acknowledge this and with it's dreamy sax solo I have found myself picking up the instrument again, determined to master the 'Midnight City' riff.

I would love if you readers could contribute in your comments. I would be interested to hear what songs you have picked as your soundtrack of the year and why?

  1. I pick anything by Kids in Glass Houses, everytime haha. They are just my favourite band ever, ever, ever! I love music, but I always find myself constantly listening to Kids in Glass Houses. The come from Cardiff too so I get so many chances to watch them perform live which makes me love them even more!
I love the sax in the song you chose, and I think it's so cool you learned to play the instrument!
